about the museum
Mohatta at Present
Mohatta Palace Museum is managed by the Mohatta Palace Gallery Trust which is an autonomous public trust. The trust deed states that the palace would house a Museum in order to foster awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage of Pakistan and of the region. An autonomous Board of Trustees was set up to oversee the restoration of the building. The first two phases of the restoration programme were successfully completed in August 1999 and the Museum opened its doors to the public on 15th September 1999. Since then, it has held over twenty five major exhibitions displaying objects and artefacts in thematic displays borrowed from both public and private collections, that have not been seen before.
Mission Statement
The Mohatta Palace Museum seeks to become a source of pride for the citizens of Karachi and of the country as it aspires to become a museum of international standing and a beacon of joy and commitment to the city. The museum hopes to become a haven of culture and tranquility in the city where children cavort and friends consort without fear or favour.
Pakistan’s audiences remain woefully underserved in the arts as its cities grow denser and more crowded, squeezing out public spaces. Mohatta Palace Museum remains a cultural island in an urban concrete jungle. Its changing displays allow audiences to engage with diverse aspects of the arts and culture of Pakistan. A majority of its exhibitions are accompanied by carefully researched catalogues that demonstrate its commitment to documentation and scholarship.
