Labyrinth of Reflections: The Art of Rashid Rana 1990-2010
Labyrinth of Reflections, was a retrospective of Rashid Rana’s career from 1992 to 2012, beginning with An Idea of Abstract I which displayed his early grid paintings made between 1992-1993, in Boston and later, in Pakistan. These works sought to subvert and contradict the aesthetics of abstraction or minimalism. His works ultimately addressed socio-political concerns and were conceptual in nature. A gallery was purpose built in the Museum to house an ambitious work titled Desperately Seeking Paradise. This was an enormous glossy cube with strategically placed mirrors on its surface which reflected a modern urban landscape with skyscrapers. On closer inspection, however, facets of the mirrors had been fitted to reveal slum dwellings in Lahore, the work serving as a metaphor for dichotomies of economy and aspiration.
The space within the Museum had been thoughtfully transformed into a white cube gallery to match the aesthetics of the display. The exhibition was accompanied by a weighty catalogue replete with large images and essays by art critics and artists.
A catalogue is available in the Museum shop.
